5th Annual Land and Water Symposium

5th Annual Land and Water Symposium
October 4-5, 2017

Kent State’s 5th annual Water and Land symposium will provide a forum for today’s understandings of natural systems and contemporary innovative design approaches for improving cities and society. Topics of conservation/recreation; living materials/fabrication; and sustainable/urbanism will create discussion on the limits of knowledge and the road to greater environmental responsibility. Held on October 4th and 5th 2017, this symposium will attract more than 300 attendees from the many universities, federal, state and regional agencies, and private companies that populate northeastern Ohio and surrounding states. This year we are delighted to have Edward Mazria, an architect, educator and author as our keynote speaker. Ed is well known for his ability to integrate “green architecture” into his designs, linking solar energy, passive heating and cooling, and other resource-conservation measures into his methodology. He is a renowned author, with his book “The Passive Solar Energy Book”, being a standard that is globally consulted. He has won many awards, including from the American Solar Energy Society and the Chairman’s award from the World Green Building Council.

The second day of the conference will highlight new approaches to a variety of environmental and social issues through distinguished speakers and formal and informal discussions. A plenary session will set the stage for breakout sessions and posters in the afternoon. Breakout sessions will focus on “Conservation and Recreation,” “Living Materials,” and “Sustainable Urbanism.” These breakout sessions will be linked to poster sessions and will provide an opportunity for more specific discussions focused on key underlying issues. Registration is free and open to the public.

Propel Ohio

Propel Ohio Leadership Program

Undergraduate Student Government is pleased to announce we are now accepting applications for Propel Ohio 2017.

Propel Ohio is a leadership conference promoting civic engagement and inspires undergraduate students to be active civic leaders in the great state of Ohio. This one day conference put on by U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown’s office, engages students in conversations around issues such as childhood poverty, education, housing security and more.

This year’s conference will be held on Friday, November 17, 2016 at the University of Akron

Senator Brown and other guest speakers will facilitate workshops and discussions on ways college students can be actively engaged in confronting some of the challenges within their communities.

Last year 250 student leaders were in attendance, including students from Kent State. This year we are excited to send more students to learn about some of the most pressing issues facing the state. We will appoint up to four undergraduate students to attend after the applications are shared with us by Senator Brown’s office. We encourage you to apply on Senator Brown’s website before the deadline, Tuesday, October 10, 2017. Decisions will be made and shared with students by Tuesday, October 31st, 2017.
